The amazingly beautiful Calla lilies have their origin in Africa, especially in the southern countries such as Malawi, Swaziland and the island of Madagascar. That part of the world provided the Calla lily with the snowless terrain and warm, tropical climate that made it easier for it to bloom. The lilies usually appear right next to ponds or sometimes on shore banks and they can grow up to be two tothree feet tall. They are famous because of their large, round shaped spathe that can grow to measure 10 inches. They are currently very popular in other areas such as North America and Ireland.
Where Do Calla Lilies Come From?
From what’s been studied in history, Calla lilies had their first origins in the southern part of Africa. They’re considered to be native to countries including Swaziland, Lesotho and South Africa, however,this species has spread all over the world at this point. The Romans made use of the Calla lilies.They would raise them to bloom indoors and at times, they used them for funerals. It was not until later when people from other areas started to use the Calla lily to decorate wedding celebrations. In more recent years, around the 1700s, the Calla lily was rediscovered and studied by a botanist from Sweden called CarolusLinneaus. He had originally made a mistake when trying to categorize the flower butthe mistake was corrected later by a botanist from Germany.
What Do Calla Lilies Look Like?
Calla lilies are tall plants and they have big bundles of green leaves that are almost shaped like arrows.They can measure up to 18 inches in length. The inflorescences (or cluster of flowers) are very big as well and can bloom in all the seasons except winter. They have a white spathe, which can measure up to 10 inches and a yellow spadex (or spike inflorescence) which can measure up to 3 and a half inches in length. You can find Calla lilies in many different beautiful colors such as white or ivory, light pink, deep purple, lavender, and hot pink. The scientific name for Calla lilies is zantedeschiaaethiopica, however, they go by many other names. Since lilies have spread all over the world, people have given them different names. For example, in some regions, they refer to Callas as “Lilies of the Nile”, given their origin in Africa. It can also be called the Easter lily, Arum lily, and Varkoor. The name of Varkoor is actually Afrikaans and it means “pig’s ear”.
